Aventura on the Front Lines

What Our Customers Say

DENVER HEALTH CUSTOMER STORY

Denver Health Customer StoryDenver, Colorado

“We were rebuilding our PCs every three to four months to keep them running as fast as possible, but it was a losing battle.”

What were you looking for?
Our biggest IT headache was our desktops. It was taking our clinicians way too long to login – sometimes up to two minutes. Getting in and out of applications was a time drain, too. As a result, some of the doctors and nurses were avoiding the computers. We researched single sign-on and devices on carts, but nothing was giving us what we wanted – consistent logins of 10 seconds or less.

Why did you decide to deploy Aventura?
We began our trial in Orthopedics. Doctors and nurses there began using the solution immediately – even without training. From the beginning, the orthopedic clinicians have been using it consistently and at point of care, which is what we were going for. Other departments started saying: “Why don’t we have that technology?”

Doctor and nurse demand for deploying the solution beyond Orthopedics spread throughout the hospital. We found out the clinicians are not anti-technology; they are just against anything that gets in the way of them doing their jobs. They are resistant to using any tools that take time away from caring for their patients.

What’s the biggest difference that Aventura has made in the life of your hospital?
After a near-instant login process with a smart card, clinicians go on as usual with their workflow, including rounds throughout the hospital. Less time logging in means more time with patients. Overall staff satisfaction has increased wherever Aventura has been deployed.

ALEGENT HEALTH CUSTOMER STORY

ALEGENT HEALTH CUSTOMER STORYNebraska and Southwestern Iowa

“Our doctors and nurses want to do the jobs they were trained for, not babysit computers. Aventura makes them happier, more productive people.”

What were you looking for?
Our doctors and nurses are constantly on the move around the hospital – treating their patients as carefully and as quickly as possible. They simply can’t, and won’t, put up with long logins to access and record patient data and to get into other applications.

We looked at workstations on wheels and portable tablets, but these options were expensive and they created a whole set of other problems. We were planning the implementation of Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE) in our emergency department, and we wanted a solution that our physicians would actually use.

How did you hear about us?
Our CMIO was visiting Denver Health and noticed how quickly doctors and nurses were logging in and out of their desktops and applications. Right away he said, “That’s the solution we’ve been looking for.”

Why did you decide to work with us?
Aventura was designed for the way doctors and nurses work. It’s hard to argue with getting instant access to patient data right at the bedside.

During our pilot, we rolled out the solution alongside our traditional PCs. Almost immediately our nurses began using Aventura wherever it was available, and avoiding our old system whenever they could.

What’s the biggest difference that Aventura has made in your hospital?
Our emergency room doctors now routinely do CPOE at the point of care. This speeds up and improves the quality of patient care and can also result in a shorter stay in the emergency room, which is good for everyone.

Our nurses are happier, too. If they’re working on a computer and they get bumped by a doctor, they don’t lose a thing. When they log back on, they pick up exactly where they left off.

How Aventura Works at Alegent

  • The nurse goes to the device next to the medication dispensing station
  • Inserts card and password
  • Accesses and checks physicians’ medication orders
  • Pulls medications from the dispensing station
  • Removes the card
  • Walks into the patient room
  • Reinserts the card and password
  • Same medication order appears on the screen
  • Nurse dispenses medication to the patient
  • Removes card and is automatically logged out from that medication order

“Now when a nurse goes into a patient room, medications
are administered quickly and accurately because they can
log on immediately and they use the system every time.”

What were you looking for?
We wanted our applications to be accessible and used
at the patient bedside. We looked at computers on wheels.
We looked at laptops, We decided the right way to do it
was to have a computer in every patient’s room. However
in order to make this system usable our doctors and
nurses needed to have almost instant access to their
desktop and applications every time they logged in.

How did you hear about us?
We met Greg Veltri, the CIO at Denver Health, at a Soarian
user’s meeting in Seattle. He said, “We have a cool solution,
check it out.” Initially we thought it was a homegrown solution
unique to Denver Health. Then Aventura came in and they were
able to demo their product with our own radiology, PACS, and
Soarian programs.

Why did you decide to work with us?
Aventura was the only company that offered a solution
that really met our needs. And once our clinicians started
using it we couldn’t tear it out of their hands. In our experience,
this is not a typical clinician response to advances in technology.

What’s the biggest difference that Aventura has made in the life of your hospital?
Our doctors and nurses can login almost instantly instead of in minutes, so they actually use the system every time. This buys
us two things. They are getting more out of our applications.
And they’re spending more quality time with their patients.
